Lititz, PA Day Trip: Chocolate, Pretzels & America's Coolest Small Town (2026)
By Best of Lancaster
Lititz won "America's Coolest Small Town" honors years ago and never gave the title back. Founded by Moravians in 1756, it's the rare historic town that's neither a museum nor a strip of souvenir shops — just a genuinely lovely, walkable Main Street eight miles north of Lancaster city. Here's the perfect day.
Morning: Twist Your Own Pretzel
Start at the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery — America's first commercial pretzel bakery, baking since 1861 in a stone house on Main Street. The short tour ends with you hand-twisting your own pretzel; kids get certificates, adults get to discover they're bad at it. Go early; tours fill by midday on Saturdays.
Mid-Morning: Chocolate and Main Street
Wilbur Chocolate has been Lititz's sweet anchor since the 1800s — the shop's Wilbur Buds predate (and locals say outclass) the more famous chocolate kiss. From there, browse the Main Street and East Main boutiques: independent bookshops, antiques, kitchen stores, and galleries, all walkable in an unhurried hour or two.
Lunch and the Springs Park
Lititz punches above its weight on food — cafés and gastropubs line the center of town. Take lunch, then walk it off in Lititz Springs Park, the spring-fed town park beside the 1756 Moravian church square that gives Lititz its postcard quality.
Afternoon: Pick Your Extension
- Amish Country: the farmland of Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse is 20 minutes southeast — add a buggy ride or the shops at Kitchen Kettle Village (see the small towns loop).
- Downtown Lancaster: 15 minutes south for Central Market (Tue/Fri/Sat) and the city's best dinner.
- Ephrata: 10 minutes northeast — on Fridays, the Green Dragon market is unmissable.
After Dark: The Lititz Ghost Tour
If you stay into the evening, Lititz's guided ghost walk turns the town's 270 years of history into the best after-dinner hour in the county:
Stay the Night
Lititz makes the county's most charming overnight base — small inns and B&Bs in historic buildings, with the whole county within 25 minutes. It's the natural pick for the romantic weekend:
Compare it against downtown and the farmland corridors in our where-to-stay guide, and slot Lititz into the bigger trip with the things to do list.
